Curatorial RemarksWyeth's preparatory notes for the three soldiers and the setting were found between pages 340 and 341 of "Poetry and Eloquence of Blue and Gray, vol. 9 of The Photographic History of the Civil War which he kept in the studio library (BRM, NCWS.95.94.4). The notes are detailed for each of the main characters, Capt. Blount, Capt. Fugua, and Major "L". For example: Blount, hero. Captain. Middle build-compact. thoughtful / intense-strong features. / long dark hair and eyes. Forage cap. / Boots. Embossed collard jacket-- / [?] inside-galons (sic) on sleeve.
