This is one of four paintings Wyeth created to illustrate an article he wrote, based on his own Western experiences. Paintings and text for "A Sheep-herder of the South-west" were published in Scribner's Magazine in January 1909.

In this evocative scene, Wyeth tried to depict the subtle colors and atmosphere of the pastoral Western scene. According to conservator Joyce Hill Stoner, to do this the artist used a complicated glazing system that was difficult to reproduce and that has not survived treatment by earlier restorers.
