Frank Vincent DuMond was influential in the field of American illustration as a teacher at the Art Students League in New York City. His earlier studies at the Académie Julian in Paris provided him with a foundation in figurative work and clear, narrative storytelling. The same year he returned from Paris, he painted Holding Tight to Patty’s Hand, an illustration for Viola Roseboro’s short story, “The Girl and the Problem.” The moment depicted is of the protagonist Beulah, a Southern belle who has come to New York to study art, confiding in her friend Patty. Beulah is grappling with the news that the beau she left behind in the South intended to marry another. DuMond heightens the scene’s drama with melodramatic gestures and communicates something of Beulah’s personality through the setting.
